What I do

Turning complexity into clarity

I work where the mechanical world meets the digital one. For more than two decades I have moved between the engine room, the shop floor, the control room and the network — diagnosing rotating machinery, designing instrumentation, integrating IT and OT (remembering that NIS2 has meaning), securing industrial systems, and turning raw process data into decisions people can act on. The thread through all of it is simple: I verify what a system actually does, rather than trusting what it is supposed to do.

What I offer

Marine & industrial engineering. Diagnostics and optimization of rotating machinery, steam turbines, medium-speed marine engines, propellers and pyrolysis/atomisation plant. MARPOL VI awareness and hands-on troubleshooting from carcass machinery to high-performance end-fittings.

Process, instrumentation & optimization. System troubleshooting, ATEX instrumentation, P&ID development, vision systems, digital thermography and failure analysis — with a habit of not stopping at "we normally do it this way."

IT/OT integration & industrial cybersecurity. SCADA/SRO systems, Profinet and industrial networking, ISA/IEC 62443 and Zero Trust design, and packet-level network analysis. Wireshark-based diagnostics built on formal training at Wireshark University — because the capture file, not the dashboard, tells you what is really talking to what.

Data, software & AI. Data architecture, warehousing and harvesting (Oracle, Snowflake, SAP), and the practical, verified use of AI — including large language models — in analysis and documentation. Fluency isn't proof: every model output is a claim to be verified, never the end of one. My engagement with AI risk goes back to 2022, when I contributed public comments on the first draft of NIST's AI Risk Management Framework, on the public record alongside Google, Microsoft, IBM, OpenAI, MITRE and others.

Find my name (Arne Havgaard) on the public record: NIST AI RMF — 1st-draft comments.

Forensic & materials investigation. Metallurgical and mechanical failure investigations, hardness testing (ASTM), polymer and vibration analysis, optical microscopy, and sound/high-speed video analysis — a structured, evidence-first approach to finding root cause. The witnesses under oath are the measurements, not the incident report.

Leadership, change & strategy. Cross-disciplinary project leadership backed by completed Harvard Manage Mentor programmes in team management, leading people, strategy, change and process improvement — the soft side that makes the technical work land.

How I work

Open the capture file instead of believing the dashboard. Read what the machine actually said.

Solve the right problem fast, document it so the client can verify it, and build solutions that scale rather than ones that merely demo well. Equally at home in the control room and hands-on at the shop floor.
